Thornwood running back Eric Tyner scored the Thunderbirds (5-5) lone touchdown with 2:44 left in the game. Cunningham completed the two point conversion, but Batavia's defense collectively held them to just 78 rushing yards between Cunningham, Tyner, De'Aviyon Rockett and Christian Miller.
"This is the eighth time that we've made the playoffs in our school's history," Thornwood coach Kenneth Smith said. "It's a big stepping stone for us. We went from 0-9, 2-7 to now 5-5. I'm happy with the overall effort."
"But, now, we just lost to a better football program," Smith continued. "A state championship-caliber team. So, we still came a long way, but we've still got a long way to do."
