BATAVIA – With the upcoming IHSA football season in a holding pattern, Batavia rising senior linebacker Matt Weerts announced his verbal commitment to Arizona University on Monday.
Weerts, a three-star recruit by the recruiting website 247Sports.com, chose the Wildcats via a video conference call with Arizona coaches broadcasted live on Twitter from Batavia Football's main Twitter account.
Weerts weighed a plethora of offers ranging from the Mid-American Conference to the Armed Services such as Army and the Air Force Academy.
Arizona offered Weerts on March 30.
According to his 247 Sports profile, Weerts received 21 offers, including one from North Dakota State, where his brother, Luke, is a sophomore and part of the FCS National champion Bison.
Weerts, 6-foot-1 and 215 pounds, had 86 tackles with eight of them for loss in 2019, where he helped lead one of the top defenses in Kane County. Weerts also turned in 2.5 sacks and 16 quarterback hurries.
Batavia last season went 9-3, advancing to the Class 7A quarterfinals.
"First of all, I'd like to thank God for all of the blessings in my life," Weerts posted on social media following the announcement. "Also, I want to thank my family, friends, teammates and all of the coaches that have recruited me throughout this process."
"[A] special thanks to the entire Batavia coaching staff and Chris Browning for all their guidance and support," Weerts continued. "I would not be in this special place without all of the love from everyone in my life. With that being said, It's time to Bear Down and I am committing to the University of Arizona! Thank you to coach [Kevin] Sumlin, coach [Def. Coordinator Paul] Rhoads and coach [Kyle] Devan for this tremendous opportunity. Go Wildcats!"
