Former St. Charles North star Lucas Segobiano leaving NIU for Illinois Wesleyan

Segobiano expects to play football and lacrosse at Wesleyan

ST. CHARLES – Lucas Segobiano needed a chance of scenery.

Segobiano, a former running back and linebacker at St. Charles North and the 2017 Kane County Chronicle Player of the Year, confirmed Monday that he is transferring from Northern Illinois University.

Segobiano redshirted this past season, his freshman year.

”I had started spring ball,” Segobiano said. “I was thinking about [transferring], but I hadn’t made a decision yet. After I entered the transfer portal, that’s when I kind of stopped with Northern.”

Segobiano is headed to Illinois Wesleyan, where he expects to play both football and lacrosse. Segobiano was listed as a wide receiver during his tenure at DeKalb, but he expects to play the positions he played in high school – running back, receiver and linebacker – at Wesleyan.

The coaching change at NIU this offseason, the opportunity to play lacrosse at Wesleyan and an academic major change played into his decision. Segobiano changed his major to Design, Technology and Entrepreneurship (DTE).

“I think I was kind of D-1 starstruck coming out of high school,” Segobiano said. “I thought D-1 football was the coolest thing and it’d be so much fun. It was cool, but at the end of the day, I’m not going to go pro. I don’t want to go pro. So, it wasn’t a better fit for me.”

Segobiano confirmed he is eligible to play immediately. Wesleyan reports for football camp Aug. 15. In the meantime, he’s been keeping in shape with trainer Bryce Biel and Legacy Performance.

In 2017, as a senior at St. Charles North, Segobiano had 934 rushing yards, 25 total touchdowns and 1,725 all-purpose yards. In 25 varsity games, the 5-foot-10, 198-pounder had 175 carries, 85 receptions, 2,817 all-purpose yards, 39 total touchdowns, 106 total tackles and three interceptions

“I’m looking forward to it,” Segobiano said of his upcoming tenure at Wesleyan. “It’ll be exciting playing both sports, but it’s also a fresh start at a new school.”
