I was correct on 109 of 128 games in the opening round.

Not bad, but those 19 losses haunt me in my dreams.

Let’s see if I can do a little better this week.

Class 8A

Last week’s picks: 15-1

For all the depth in 8A, there weren’t a lot of really close games in the opening round. But nearly all of the clear favorites advanced, and the Round 2 games feature a number of contests that could easily be classified as a coin flip.

• Brother Rice over Oak Park-River Forest

• Gurnee Warren over Hinsdale Central

• Homewood-Flossmoor over Barrington

• Marist over Naperville Central

• Lincoln-Way East over Glenbard West

• Edwardsville over Aurora West

• Oswego over Loyola

• Maine South over Waubonsie Valley

Class 7A

Last week’s picks: 13-3

The gaps in 7A also were rather wide in the opening round. A couple of notable results include Maine West’s first-ever playoff victory and St. Charles North’s robust victory over Normal Community. They look like a strong candidate to make a little bit of a run as a team seeded below 20.

• Simeon over Lincoln-Way West

• Nazareth over Hersey

• Batavia over Moline

• Willowbrook over Maine West

• East St. Louis over Glenbard East

• Mount Carmel over Lake Zurich

• Wheaton Warrenville South over Hononegah

• St. Charles North over Rolling Meadows

Class 6A

Last week’s picks: 15-1

The geographical division of the Class 6A bracket has led to some compelling second-round matchups. Not only do you have a pairing between the defending Class 6A and Class 5A champions, but a virtual clash of titans between two central Illinois powers in Washington and Sacred Heart Griffin.

• Cary-Grove over Kaneland

• Prairie Ridge over Phillips

• Antioch over Lakes

• Crystal Lake South over Niles Notre Dame

• Oak Lawn Richards over Yorkville

• Normal West over Shepard

• Washington over Sacred Heart Griffin

• Crete-Monee over Chatham Glenwood

Class 5A

Last week’s picks: 13-3

There was very little noise from the lower seeds with the exception of Evergreen Park’s “upset” of top seed Payton on the north side of the bracket. That clears the way for Montini to likely take apart the rest of that side bit by bit.

• Evergreen Park over Elmwood Park

• Montini over Sycamore

• Sterling over Chicago Brooks

• Rockford Boylan over Wheaton St. Francis

• Hillcrest over Decatur MacArthur

• Cahokia over Carbondale

• Highland over Mattoon

• Joliet Catholic over Marion

Class 4A

Last week’s picks: 12-4

There were some minor surprises in this bracket, most notably Urban Prep Bronzeville’s victory over St. Edward. Bronzeville’s win is a rare one for a CPL team over a non-CPL team, but it will be difficult for that trend to continue. The four favorites moved on with little difficulty.

• IC Catholic over Stillman Valley

• Marengo over Urban Prep-Bronzeville

• Coal City over Johnsburg

• Richmond-Burton over Genoa-Kingston

• Taylorville over Columbia

• Rochester over Pontiac

• Effingham over Paris

• Bishop McNamara over Murphysboro

Class 3A

Last week’s picks: 13-3

It was a big week for teams seeded in the double digits, as five teams seeded 10th or lower picked up first-round wins. That trend will lead to numerous second-round games where the seed gap is pretty wide, but the level of competition might not decrease because of it.

• Byron over Princeton

• North Boone over Lisle

• Spring Valley Hall over Herscher

• Monmouth over Eureka

• Monticello over Anna-Jonesboro

• Pleasant Plains over Greenville

• Carlinville over Paxton

• Williamsville over Fairfield

Class 2A

Last week’s picks: 14-2

This field is loaded and the first round did not disappoint with some wild games, as well as some of the favorites staking early claims to favorite roles with some dominant performances.

• GCMS over Hope Academy

• Sterling Newman over Illini West

• Orion over Rockridge

• Eastland-Pearl City over Chicago Christian

• St. Teresa over Athens

• Tri-Valley over Pana

• Maroa-Forsyth over Chester

• Tuscola over Bismarck-Henning

Class 1A

Last week’s picks: 14-2

This likely is a staging week for this field as the potential quarterfinal matchups in this class look to be outstanding.

The game to watch here clearly is Aurora Christian vs. Princeville as the top-seeded Princes should face a strong challenge from an Aurora Christian team that simply doesn’t fit the mold of a 1A team.

• Aurora Christian over Princeville

• Lena-Winslow over Chicago Orr

• Ottawa Marquette over Dakota

• Forreston over Milledgeville

• Argenta-Oreana over Fisher

• Moweaqua Central A&M over Edwards County

• Camp Point Central over Carrollton

• Concord Triopia over Arcola
